Monitors issues affecting our National Forests. Preserve ancient
forests and roadless areas. Protect watersheds and forest habitat.

analyze and comment on public lands management, lobby
government officials, and educate the public. |
|
Cascade Checkerboard Project
|
Railroad land grants over 100 years ago have left us the
"checkerboard" pattern of ownership in the central Cascades. The
Checkerboard Project seeks to improve the management of these
lands by returning key blocks of habitat to public ownership.
Current issues include the pending land exchange between Plum
Creek Timber Company and the National Forests and the
proposed Habitat Conservation Plan for the Cedar River
Watershed owned by the City of Seattle. |
|
Waters & Salmon Committee
|
Focuses on preserving and restoring wild salmon runs in Western
Washington and the Columbia Basin. The Committee tracks
BPA, dam management & removal, hatcheries, and state
regulation of water and fish resources. Committee members do
public & media outreach, lobby legislators & other decision
makers, and monitor resources in the field. |
|
Transportation Committee
|
Pavement or pastures? Cities or sprawl? Transportation planning
decisions happening now will determine whether Western
Washington retains its urban/rural character or becomes another
Los Angeles. The Committee educates the public on the ways
road-building subsidizes sprawl and works to re-direct public
resources toward alternatives that promote livable urban
communities. |
|
National Parks & Wilderness Committee
|
Monitors management decisions affecting National Parks and
Wilderness areas in Washington State. |
|
Legal Committee
|
Provides briefs and other support for litigation to compel
enforcement of the laws and rules protecting our environment.
The Committee reviews all Chapter-related legal matters. |
|
Political Committee
|
Do you want laws protecting our environment? The only way to
get them is to elect good lawmakers. This Committee manages
the endorsement process for candidates seeking public office
within the Chapter's territory. Committee members interview
candidates, make endorsement decisions, and recommend
allocation of Sierra Club WA State PAC resources to endorsed
candidates. |

Inner City Outings
Beth Gardner & Curt Peterson, Co-Chairs

Last year, Inner City Outings brought 500 young people into the
wilderness, many for the first time. ICO thrives on the excitement
and energy of young people learning the wonders of our natural
world, developing poise an self-confidence, and becoming
leaders. Most of the youth participants have no other opportunity
to experience wild nature. Adult volunteers are needed. |
